Kanyakumari (Tamil Nadu), Prime Minister Narendra Modi began his 45-hour meditation at the famous Vivekananda Rock Memorial here on Thursday evening.

After arriving by helicopter from nearby Thiruvananthapuram, Modi offered prayers at the Bhagavathi Amman temple and reached the Rock Memorial by a ferry service and began the meditation which is scheduled to last till June 1.

Dressed in dhoti and white shawl, Modi offered prayers at the temple and circumambulated the sanctum sanctorum. The priests performed a special 'aarti' and were given temple 'prasad' which included a shawl and a framed photograph of the temple's presiding deity.

Later, he reached the Rock Memorial by a ferry service operated by the State Government-run Shipping Corporation and began his meditation at the 'Dhya Mandapam'.Before beginning his meditation practice, Modi stood for a while on the steps leading to the mandapam, which offers a breathtaking view of the sea that surrounds the monument.

Before his departure on June 1, Modi is likely to visit the Thiruvalluva statue next to the memorial. Both the monument and the 133-foot-tall statue were built on small islets, which are isolated and mound-like rock formations in the ocean.

After the conclusion of the hectic Lok Sabha election campaign, in which he chaired and addressed several political events such as road shows and rallies, Modi will meditate in a serene environment, where possibly only the sound of breaking waves can be heard.

While security personnel have cordoned off the memorial complex, security has been beefed up across Kanyakumari district and around 2,000 police personnel have been deployed, besides the Coast Guard and Navy have also stepped up vigil.

Modi will meditate from Thursday evening till June 1 at the Dhyana Mandapam, the place where spiritual icon Vivekananda, admired by the PM, received a divine vision about 'Bharat Mata'.
