Hyderabad: The students' union of the University of Hyderabad (UoH) held an agitation here on Monday demanding revocation of the suspension of five students for protesting in front of the Vice-Chancellor's residence on the campus in May.

Following the call by the student union, some students gathered in front of the administration block of the university and protested demanding suspension of five students and withdrawal of the case registered against them besides imposing fine on five other students.

The UoH administration had earlier suspended five students, including the student union president, for one semester and fined five other students Rs 10,000 each after they joined a protest in front of the vice-chancellor's residence on the campus on May 18.

This protest was held to postpone the students' festival 'Sukoon-2024'.

The University of Hyderabad (UoH) administration had issued an order in May informing the union to hold SUKUON-2024 (which was earlier proposed during the vacation period) when the university is open for the academic session (in August), holidays. Not during.

"Besides, the model code of conduct for parliamentary elections was in force till June 4 and law enforcement agencies had also laid down 13 instructions for conducting the festival," the UoH said in a release.

However, the student union entered the Vice-Chancellor's house at 1.00 pm on May 18 without any notice and prevented the Vice-Chancellor and his family members from leaving the house.

The VC and UOH administration had also alerted the police and later a case was also registered in this regard.

A UoH official on Monday said the student union's petition will be placed before the university's executive council meeting on June 28 for a decision.

However, students protested today.

The official said that the suspension will come into effect from July 1.
