Kolkata: A protest was held near the headquarters of the West Bengal education department in Salt Lake on Thursday, alleging irregularities in the medical entrance exam NEET-UG and delay in starting admissions in state-run colleges.

Expressing solidarity with students on the NEET-UG issue, TMC demanded a Supreme Court-monitored investigation.

Holding placards in their hands, members of the All India Democratic Students Organization (AIDSO) were heading towards Vikas Bhawan in Salt Lake near Kolkata when they were stopped by the police.

The police initially tried to pacify the protesters and remove them from the area. However, when they insisted on moving forward, the police detained some of them and took them away in vehicles.One of the protesters claimed that the future of many aspiring doctors is in danger due to the controversy over NEET-UG.

Besides, there is growing frustration among students as even a month after the declaration of higher secondary results, admissions in government colleges have not started, while private colleges have already started the process, he said.

TMC spokesperson Shantanu Sen alleged that the BJP-led government at the Center is playing with the future of the students.

"This is one of the biggest scams of the BJP led central government. BJP is playing with the future of lakhs of students. We demand a Supreme Court monitored investigation into this entire NEET-UG scam which has resulted in the death of nearly 24 Lakhs have been affected.Students,” said Sen, who is also a doctor.

Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan rejected the allegations of paper leak in NEET-UG, saying that there is no evidence of it.

The Center told the Supreme Court that the decision to grant grace marks to 1,563 NEET-UG 2024 candidates for admission to MBBS, BDS and other courses has been canceled and they will be given the option to retake the exam on June 23.
