The protesters were demanding removal of the newly installed smart electricity meters.

MGVCL has installed 25,000 smart meters across Vadodara, but many users have reported excessive charges and technical issues with smart meters. Residents have also complained that their prepaid amount of Rs 2,000 has been exhausted within a week.

Rahish, a resident of Subhanpura, who lives in a rented house, received a message from MGVCL, in which his bill was Rs 9.24 lakh.

Residents of Parvati Nagar in Akshar Chowk area also gathered at the Vij office raising slogans against MGVCL.

Ashish, a resident, said: "I did a recharge of Rs 2,300 and it got exhausted in 10 days. It is unbearable. Earlier, our bill was Rs 3,000. During the summer, it was Rs 10,000 per month. Smart meters are provided to every Needed." While affordable for some, bills can fluctuate wildly.

A woman from Parvati Nagar said that she wants the old meter back. “These new meters are very expensive. We were not given information about their establishment. If we had known, we would have objected. After two days of no electricity, we were asked to recharge the smart meter. "We can't afford these bills."
