New Delhi: Left groups on Thursday protested against the order to prosecute writer Arundhati Roy and former Kashmir Central University professor Sheikh Shaukat Hussain under the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.

Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena had earlier last week sanctioned the prosecution of Roy and Hussain for allegedly making inflammatory speeches at an event in 2010.

Carrying banners and posters, a large number of students and CPI-ML members gathered at Jantar Mantar here to register their protest, demanding the dropping of UAPA charges against the duo. The All India Students' Association (AISA) also participated in the protests, observing Prativard Diwas or protest day.

On 21 October 2010, Roy and Hussain participated in a conference organized under the banner of 'Azadi – The Only Way'.

According to Raj Niwas officials, the issues discussed and talked about at the conference "promoted the separation of Kashmir from India".
