Nagpur: Several followers of BR Ambedkar on Monday protested against the construction of underground parking facility in the premises of Deekshabhoomi memorial in Nagpur and tried to dismantle the infrastructure.

Police Commissioner Ravindra Singhal said that the situation is under control.

Amid the protests, the Babasaheb Ambedkar Memorial Committee, keeping in mind the sentiments of the people, banned construction activity at the site, a committee member said.

Ambedkar converted to Buddhism along with thousands of his followers, mainly Dalits, at Deekshabhoomi on October 14, 1956.

The protesters claimed that the ongoing construction of underground parking could cause structural damage to the Deekshabhoomi memorial.

The construction of underground parking is part of a project initiated by the Government of Maharashtra to beautify the Deekshabhoomi memorial.
