New Delhi, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Thursday thanked the Samajwadi Party leadership on the performance of India Bloc in the Lok Sabha elections in Uttar Pradesh and said that workers of both the parties fought the elections unitedly and became the sentinels of democracy.

The BJP-led NDA suffered a setback in UP, where it won only 36 seats, while the India Bloc got 43 seats – a significant contribution to the opposition alliance's total.

In a post in Hindi on Instagram, Priyanka Gandhi congratulated SP chief Akhilesh Yadav, his wife Dimple Yadav and SP Rajya Sabha MP Ram Gopal Yadav.

He also congratulated the 'hardworking' workers of SP for the UP results.

"Together we fought a historic battle under difficult circumstances. On the ground, Congress and SP workers courageously raised their voice for people's issues, social justice and the Constitution. Despite all threats and repression, they stood united." And became the sentinels of democracy and stood at every booth,” the Congress general secretary said.

Priyanka Gandhi said, "Because of the hard work of all of you, the public has shown faith in our unity and our commitment to the issues" and thanked the SP leaders and workers.

Akhilesh Yadav-led SP, which leads the India faction in UP, got 37 seats alone this time, becoming the largest party in the politically important state. BJP managed to win 33 seats compared to 62 seats won in 2019.

SP's ally Congress won six seats in the elections, including Amethi and Rae Bareli. In the NDA, Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) won two seats, while Anupriya Patel-led Apna Dal (S) got one seat.
