New Delhi [India], President Draupadi Murmu on Thursday celebrated the birth anniversary of Pandit Raghunath Murmu and appreciated his remarkable contribution to the Santali community. Addressing the X, President Murmu said, "I pay tribute to Pandit Raghunath Murmu on his birth anniversary. By developing the Ol Chiki script, he gave a new identity to the Santhali language. His contribution in promoting the Santhali language has earned the Santhali people “Opportunities have also been increased.” And made them more aware of their rich cultural heritage.Philosopher, writer and teacher Pandit Raghunath Murmu became famous as the great figure of the Santali tribes in India for his contribution to the Santali community by first developing the "Ol Chiki" script. Before the nineteenth century in India, there was no written language in Santali, knowledge was transmitted orally from one generation to the next. Later, European researchers and Christian missionaries started using Bengali Odia and Roman scripts to document the Santali language. Raghunath Murmu, who created the "Ol Chick" script, was not accepted, which enriched the cultural identity of the Santali society. He wrote many songs, plays and school textbooks in this script. Raghunath Murmu was born on the day of Baisakhi Purnima (Buddha). Purnima) in 1905 at a Dandbos (Dahardih) village, Rairangpur which was a part of Mayurbhanj state of Odisha.Nandlal Murmu and Salma Murmu were his parents. His father, Nandlal Murmu, was the village head and his uncle was a munsi in the court of Raja Pratap Chandra Bhanjdev of Mayurbhanj state. As per the traditional social customs of the Santali people, he was named Chunu Murmu after his birth. However, later the priest who performed his naming ceremony changed his name from Chunu Murmu to Raghunath Murmu. During the Swadeshi movement in 1942, he was branded as a revolutionary when he was campaigning for his invented Ol Chick script.He would teach the villagers to read and write the Ol' Chick alphabet while traveling to many places. H also wrote various books like Parsi Poha, Parsiitun, Ranarah, Alkha, Ol Kemed etc. to learn Ol Chiki. He went to his native village to spend the last days of his life. He spent his entire life spreading the use of the Ol' Chick script, while his mother-in-law took care of his family and home. In 1956, the All India Sarna Conference (people who worship nature are called Sarna) was held in Karachi.Near Jamshedpur. In this conference, prominent leader Jaipal Singh honored him with the title of Guru Domke (Great Teacher). He was also honored with the title of "Guru Gomke (Great Teacher) by the Mayurbhanj State Adivasi Mahasabha. During this time his brother-in-law Muniram Baski gifted him a printing machine. He designed various metal script typefaces (heavy-light-large) Chote from Kolkata and started printing his books in Ol Chiki script. Under his direction, the weekly magazine Sagen Sakam was published and distributed to spread Santali literature. He used to say that without Ol Chiki our literature would not have progressed. Can Grow was also established under his guidance.He visited Santali-dominated places in West Bengal, Bihar, Assam and Odisha and taught people about the use of the Ol' Chick alphabet (au-ote-o-ang) in phonetics through his songs. Was successful in convincing people about the need for script. He also started a non-political organization called SECA (Social-Educational N Cultural Association) to organize meetings at various places where everyone could share their views. Pandit Murmu wrote more than 150 plays, short stories, novels and poems in Ol Chiki script. He received many awards for his pioneering work.Pandit Raghunath Murmu breathed his last on February 2, 1982.
