Male: Maldivian President Mohammed Muizzu discussed ways to strengthen bilateral cooperation with India on his first official visit to the country, the Ministry of External Affairs said here on Tuesday.

Muizzu, known for his pro-China leanings, was in India for the swearing-in ceremony of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Union Council of Ministers.

Modi took oath as Prime Minister for a record third time on Sunday, leading the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government.

The ceremony was attended by top leaders from India's neighborhood and the Indian Ocean region, including Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal 'Prachanda' of Nepal, President of Sri Lanka Ranil Wickremesinghe and President of Mauritius Pravind Kumar Jugnauth.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs here, Muizzu concluded his official visit and reached back to Male on Tuesday morning."The President visited India at the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to attend the swearing-in ceremony of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers of the Government of India," the ministry said in a statement.

"During the visit, President Dr Muizzu attended a banquet hosted by Her Excellency Draupadi Murmu, President of India in honor of the visiting dignitaries," it said.

"The two Presidents also held a meeting in which they discussed strengthening bilateral cooperation between Maldives and India," it said.

During the meeting, President Murmu extended his best wishes to the new government and people of Maldives. He expressed confidence that under Muizzu's leadership the island nation will continue to move forward on the path of prosperity and development.A statement from the Presidential Secretariat said, "The two leaders noted the long-term and multidimensional relations between the two countries and noted the important aspects of our wide-ranging bilateral cooperation, including people-to-people engagement, capacity building cooperation, economic and trade relations and development cooperation." Murmu expressed hope that India-Maldives relations will continue to strengthen in the coming years.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar also met Muizzu.

Jaishankar said in a post on X, "Delighted to meet Dr. Mohammed Muizzu, President of Maldives, in New Delhi today. India and Maldives look forward to working closely together.,

According to the External Affairs Ministry statement, Muizzu was accompanied by a high-level government delegation.

“This is his first visit to India since he assumes office on November 17, 2023,” it said.

Unlike his predecessors, who first traveled to New Delhi after assuming office, Muizzu had previously traveled to Turkiye and China for his first state visit in January.

Relations between India and Maldives came under severe strain after Muizzu, known for his pro-China leanings, took charge of the top office.

Within hours of his oath-taking, he had demanded the withdrawal of all Indian military personnel operating the three aviation platforms from their country.Last month, Indian military personnel were replaced by Indian civilians.
