Although the BJP won 12 Lok Sabha seats, it was ahead on 16 if only the data of postal ballots are considered, where a large section of the voters are state government employees.

Another interesting phenomenon that has emerged from the postal ballots, according to data available with the office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), is that BJP candidates lost in some constituencies where postal ballots gave them a substantial lead. Similarly, there were constituencies where Trinamool Congress candidates lost but were ahead as per the postal ballot data.

The BJP was ahead in postal ballots in Cooch Behar, Raiganj, Balurghat, Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar, Maldaha-North and Maldaha-South in North Bengal and Ranaghat, Purulia, Murshidabad, Medinipur, Krishnanagar, Bongaon, Tamluk and Baharampur. South Bengal, and Trinamool in the remaining 26 constituencies. There was no constituency where any candidate from the Congress-Left Front alliance was ahead in the postal ballots.
