Dehradun: Security guards struggled to move stretchers out of the way and terrified patients sat in their beds as a police vehicle carrying a nurse officer accused of molesting a woman doctor passed through the waiting area of ​​AIIMS Rishikesh .

A video of this incident that took place on May 21 went viral on social media on Thursday.

In the video, the police vehicle can be seen passing through the waiting area with rows of beds on either side. Security guards rush in and push the beds aside to make way for the police vehicle, while shocked patients and their attendants watch.

Police said Satish Kumar, a nursing officer, allegedly molested a junior resident doctor in an operation theater of the trauma ward on May 19.The doctor lodged a complaint on May 21, following which Kumar was taken into custody.

Police officials said that the accused was later released after interrogation and investigation into the case is ongoing.

Dehradun Senior Superintendent of Police Ajay Singh said, "There was an angry protest by the resident doctors because of the molestation of the woman doctor... and it was necessary to take her out safely and take her to the police station."

To ensure safe exit of the accused, the police vehicle went up to the fourth floor of the hospital using the ramp for the emergency exit, he said, adding that this was done with the permission of the AIIMS administration.

The nursing officer had admitted herself to the psychiatric ward of the hospital, from where the police had to take her away.A junior resident doctor at AIIMS, Rishikesh, on condition of anonymity, said the accused got himself admitted to the psychiatric ward to show that the crime was committed because he was suffering from a mental illness.

The SSP said the accused was brought in a police vehicle from the fourth floor to the first floor, where protesters had gathered, and then taken to the waiting area.

He said, "If this was not done then anything could have happened, even mob lynching."

Police said the accused has been booked under sections 354 (assault with intent to disrobe a woman) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code.

Kumar tendered a written apology to the hospital administration and was suspended after the incident.However, the doctors are demanding his dismissal.
