The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon in Hamburg's St. Pauli district, just before the match at the neighboring Volksparkstadion.
According to the police statement, a major operation is underway in St. Pauli and the attacker is undergoing treatment.
"A major police operation is currently underway in St. Pauli. According to preliminary findings, a man threatened police officers with a pickaxe and an incendiary device. The police then used their firearms. The attacker was injured and Currently receiving medical treatment,” Hamburg police said in an official statement quoted by Sky Sports.
Video footage posted online shows a man waving an ax at police officers, followed by several suspicious gunshots, the BBC reports.
It said police have not identified the man and officials have not commented on what they believe to be the motive behind the incident.
