Pune: Police on Wednesday averted a possible clash by detaining BJP workers heading towards the Congress office in Pune amid a war of words between local leaders of the two parties.

The tension started this morning when BJP's Pune city president Dheeraj Ghate put up hoardings condemning Lok Sabha opposition leader Rahul Gandhi's remarks on Hindus in the context of the BJP.

Hitting back, Pune City Congress President Arvind Shinde claimed that Ghate moves around under police protection in fear of his life.

Speaking to reporters, Shinde also condemned right-wing leader Sambhaji Bhide's remarks on women's attire.

Angered by Shinde's taunt, BJP workers started marching towards Congress Bhawan in Shivaji Nagar area, while opposition party workers gathered at the party office.

However, the conflict was averted due to timely police intervention.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 1) Sandeep Singh Gill said, "To avoid any untoward incident, we detained BJP workers going to the Congress office."

Police have increased security by deploying additional soldiers in Shivaji Nagar.

At an event during the 'Vaari' (annual pilgrimage procession) in Pune on June 30, Bhide remarked that women wearing "dress material" should not participate in the 'Vat Savitri' puja (performed by married women). He also allegedly made some comments insulting the independence of India.
