New Delhi: Delhi Police briefly detained an eatery owner in northwest Delhi's Jahangirpuri following a complaint about him allegedly selling biryani on disposable plates bearing the picture of Lord Ram, officials said on Tuesday.

A police officer said that during investigation it was found that the shopkeeper had purchased 1000 plates from a factory and only four of them had Lord Ram's picture printed on them.

“They told us they were not aware about the picture of Lord Ram on the plates, which was also verified by the factory owners,” the officer said.

The matter came to light when Delhi Police received information from Jahangirpuri on Saturday afternoon about selling biryani on plates with the picture of Lord Ra.

A police officer said, "When a team reached the spot, some people were found protesting outside the shop. They were pacified after assurance of a proper investigation into the matter."

The shopkeeper was detained under IPC section 107/151 (preventive detention) and later let go, he said, adding that the plates were also confiscated.

The officer said that no case has been registered yet and the matter is being investigated.
