CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu Health Minister Ma Subramaniam on Saturday took a jibe at AIADMK chief Edappadi K Palaniswami as a 'medical expert' for claiming that the state does not have stock of antidote to treat methanol consumption.

Subramanian said that opposition leader Palaniswami is in a state of confusion about the medicines, 'Omeprazole' and 'Fomepizole'. He said, the former chief minister had claimed on June 20 that there was no stock of Omeprazole and he had refuted it. The state has a stock of '4.42 crore (numbers may include capsules/injections) Omeprazole'.

“Today, medical expert Edappadi (Palaniswami) is misleading by saying that there is no stock of fomepizole.” The minister said the state has an inventory of fomepizole injections, which is more than the requirement. In a post on X, he said that people affected by the consumption of the poisonous extract are being treated following standard treatment protocols.

For the treatment of people affected by illicit liquor, the protocol followed at the central government-administered JIPMER and the state government medical college hospitals at Kallakurichi, Salem and Villupuram is the same.

The minister took a jibe at Edappadi Palaniswami as a 'medical expert' and said if the AIADMK chief 'comes up with any new treatment protocol, it will be followed' if it can help prevent loss of lives.
