Chennai, Tamil Nadu BJP president K Annamalai on Wednesday demanded Rs 1 crore from a senior DMK leader for spreading "defamatory, false propaganda" against him in connection with the Kallakurichi hooch tragedy in which around 60 people died. , and said. The legal notice was sent to DMK organizing secretary RS Bharathi by Annamalai's lawyer RC Paul Kanagaraj and the BJP leader shared a copy of it on his 'X' handle.

"Here is a copy of the defamation notice sent today to Thiru RS Bharathi, Organization Secretary, DMK, in which he has accused me of carrying out defamatory, false propaganda against me to divert attention from the DMK's misgovernance, which has led to the death of more than 60 people. Died in Kallakurichi."

"We have demanded Rs 1 crore as compensation, which will be used to build and run a de-addiction center in Karunapuram, Kallakurichi," the BJP leader said.

Among other things, the notice said Bharti held the BJP "responsible" for the tragedy and that "they are the ones who did this." It also accused Bharathi of making certain direct allegations against Annamalai which were "false, fabricated and inaccurate", thereby lowering the dignity of the saffron party leader.

Kanagaraj said his client has asked Bharti to tender an unconditional apology within three days of receiving the legal notice.

Annamalai also demanded compensation of Rs 1 crore.
