Ghanche District [POGB], Assembly members from Khaplu Valley in Ghanche district of Pakistan occupied Gilgit Baltistan (POGB) recently expressed concern at a conference on the ongoing water crisis in the area. People living in the area are facing serious water crisis. Lack of safe drinking water, especially during peak tourist season. The region is commonly known for its glacial streams and lakes, but despite all this, residents face water scarcity due to unavailability of proper water supply system in the region. At the recent conference, one of the assembly members emphasized this point.Solar electrification was the only solution, but the project could not be completed as the tenders were not passed by the local administration. "This water problem in Khaplu is increasing with every passing day. It is a big issue for the residents as the flow of tourists is also increasing." There is no drinking water in hotels and many other problems due to poor water supply. Tender should be issued again for solarisation, lifting and work in Ghanche stream should be started immediately. The plan will have to be revised and we all know that the government does not have money,” the member said.Notably, the residents of Khaplu Valley are deprived of basic amenities like water due to lack of water supply lines, this has also affected the economy of the region as tourism is a major source of earning for the people living in this region. Supply becomes even more important, not only for the survival of families but also to ensure that businesses and local economies thrive. Residents of POGB now blame Pakistan for plundering the natural resources of Gilgi Baltistan for more than seven decades. Moreover, Pakistan has also deprived the local people of POGB of their basic rights. Furthermore, some members of the POGB Assembly conference also claimed that the country has an agenda to keep the region underdeveloped for its own benefit.
