PM Modi posted on Twitter, "Thank you Rishi Sunak for your commendable leadership of the UK and your active contribution in strengthening relations between India and the UK during his tenure. Best wishes to you and your family for the future."

Earlier in the day, Conservative Party leader Sunak accepted defeat in the UK general election as Keir Starmer-led Labor won a landslide victory.

PM Modi and the outgoing Prime Minister of Britain recently met on the sidelines of the 50th G7 summit in Apulia, Italy last month, where they reiterated their commitment to further strengthen the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries.

During their talks, the two leaders also reflected on the strength of India-UK relations and agreed that it will continue to grow in the future.

Sunak had congratulated PM Modi on the BJP-led NDA's third consecutive election victory and stressed that Britain and India have one of the closest friendships which will continue.

In May, the UK Prime Minister hailed India's rise as an 'economic superpower', saying that new and fast-growing economic superpowers like India, Indonesia and Nigeria are significantly reshaping the global economy.
