The President accepted the resignation and requested the Prime Minister and the Council of Ministers to remain in office until the new government takes office.

The last meeting of the Union Cabinet was held on Wednesday morning at the Prime Minister's residence, where the proposal to dissolve the 17th Lok Sabha was passed.

This comes a day after the Lok Sabha election results, in which the BJP-led NDA got an absolute majority with around 295 seats, paving the way for the formation of the next government.

The BJP alone secured 240 seats, more than the combined strength of the India Bloc, while its allies Telugu Desam Party and JD-U secured 16 and 12 seats respectively.

President Murmu also invited all the outgoing ministers of the Modi government for dinner.

Meanwhile, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is scheduled to meet on Wednesday evening to decide the future strategy to form the government for the third consecutive time under the leadership of Narendra Modi.

In the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections, BJP has emerged as the largest party and NDA as the largest alliance.

The tenure of the 17th Lok Sabha is ending on 16 June.
