In New Delhi [India], Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday congratulated Keir Starmer on taking over as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and on the Labor Party's notable victory in the general election.

In a telephone conversation, the Prime Minister invited Prime Minister Starmer for an upcoming visit to India.

The two leaders agreed to work towards the early conclusion of a mutually beneficial India-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA).

"Both leaders recalled the historic relations between the two countries and reaffirmed their commitment to further deepen and advance the India-UK Comprehensive Strategic Partnership," a PMO statement said.

Appreciating the positive contributions of the Indian community to the social, economic and political development of the United Kingdom, the two sides agreed to continue promoting closer people-to-people ties.

Both leaders agreed to stay in touch.

Prime Minister Modi also said that the two countries were committed to deepening economic ties.

"Delighted to speak with @Keir_Starmer. I congratulated him on being elected Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. We remain committed to deepening the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and strong economic links for the progress and prosperity of our people and the global good," said the first Minister Modi. in a post on X.

The Labor Party won a huge mandate in the UK elections and came to power after 14 years of Conservative rule.

Starmer, a former lawyer who entered Parliament in 2015, took over the Labor leadership in 2020.

In his first speech at 10 Downing Street, Starmer promised to serve all citizens, regardless of who they voted for, and assured that the process of change would begin immediately to "rebuild Britain."

Prime Minister Modi had earlier praised former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's contribution in fostering ties between India and the UK.

"Thank you @RishiSunak for your admirable leadership in the UK and your active contribution to deepening India-UK ties during your tenure. Best wishes to you and your family for the future," PM Modi posted on x.
