New Delhi [India], Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday congratulated Prem Singh Tamang for being sworn in as the Chief Minister of the Himalayan state of Sikkim for the second consecutive term.

"Congratulations to Shri @PSTamangGolay on being sworn in as Chief Minister of Sikkim. Wish him a successful tenure and look forward to working with him for the progress of Sikkim," PM Modi posted on Twitter.

BJP MP from Darjeeling Raju Bista also wished Tamang and stressed that the double engine government in the state will work together.

Bista said, “I convey my best wishes to PS Gole ji.Darjeeling and Sikkim not only share a border but also have a common heritage. Whenever Darjeeling was in need, Sikkim has helped us like an elder brother. The double engine government will work together."

Meanwhile, Tamang thanked the people of the state for giving him an overwhelming majority.

When asked the reason behind the victory, Tamang said that he fulfilled the promises made in 2019 and did development work in the state, which is why people elected him.

“I thank the people of Sikkim for giving us an overwhelming majority. The reason behind our victory is that we fulfilled the promises made in 2019 and carried out development work in the state. National security is our top priority. We are completing 50 years of becoming a state. I will talk to the PM on this in 2025," the Chief Minister told ANI.

Governor Laxman Prasad Acharya administered the oath of office and secrecy to Tamang and his council of ministers during the swearing-in ceremony at Paljor Stadium.Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) won 31 out of 32 seats, thus sweeping the assembly elections in the Himalayan state, while the opposition Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) was restricted to a lone seat.

Tamang earlier described the party's victory as a 'record' as the state reportedly had the most peaceful elections in Sikkim and thanked all those who had supported the party's return to power.

"In 5 years we will fulfill all the announcements that we made at the time of elections. I want to thank all our workers, they worked hard. I also want to thank the public. This is the most peaceful election in Sikkim, this is a record," he said.

Tamang won the election from Renock assembly seat by defeating SDF's Som Nath Paudyal by over 7,396 votes.

Voting for the 32 assembly seats of Sikkim was held in the first phase on April 19 along with the Lok Sabha elections.

This is the third time that Sikkim has seen a landslide victory for a political party, as similar results were achieved by Sikkim Sangram Parishad and SDF in 1989 and 2009 respectively. In the 2019 assembly elections, SKM won 17 seats, while SDF won 15 of the 32 seats. SKM won 10 seats in 2014 as it contested its first assembly elections.

Interestingly, SKM had joined hands with the BJP-led NDA before the 2019 assembly elections, but eventually broke ties and contested the 2019 assembly elections alone.
