New Delhi, In a rare gesture, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday shook hands in the Lok Sabha before they took him to the Speaker's side after Om Birla was elected as the speaker of the lower house.

Soon after Protem Speaker B Mahtab announced Birla's election as Speaker, PM Modi walked to the front bench, where Kota MPs were sitting.

Soon Gandhi also joined Modi. After shaking hands with Birla, Rahul extended his hand towards the Prime Minister, to which Modi responded.

Both of them took Birla to the speaker's chair. The Speaker recognized Gandhi as the leader of the opposition after he was nominated for the post by the Congress.

Gandhi had hugged PM Modi in Parliament in 2018 also. This unexpected gesture soon became a favorite video clip for television channels. Initially Modi appeared displeased, but soon he called Gandhi back and patted him on the back.
