Ahead of the distribution of the 17th installment of the PM-Kisan scheme, below are some highlights of the flagship scheme of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government.

* World's largest direct benefit transfer scheme

The initiative is one of the world's largest direct benefit transfer schemes that leverages digital platforms for transparent enrollment and transfer of welfare funds to farmers.

PM-Kisan has ended dependence on moneylenders and promoted sustainable farming practices.

By eliminating middlemen, the scheme ensures equal support to all farmers, which is an important step towards agricultural empowerment and financial inclusion.*Example of cooperative federalism

The scheme is a shining example of cooperative federalism as states register and verify the eligibility of farmers while the Center provides 100 percent funding for the scheme.

At least one in four beneficiaries is a woman farmer, while more than 85 percent of the beneficiaries under the scheme include small and marginal farmers.

* Technology for transparency

Under PM-Kisan, a farmer-centric digital infrastructure has been created to extend the benefits of the scheme to all farmers across the country, without the involvement of any middleman.

PM-Kisan portal has been integrated with the portals of UIDAI, PFMS, NPCI and Income Tax Department.

States/UTs and all other stakeholders are involved on the PM-Kisan platform to provide prompt services to farmers.While farmers can register their complaints on the PM-Kisan portal and take help of 24x7 call facility for effective and timely resolution, the government has also developed 'Kisan e-Mitra' (a voice-based AI chatbot) , which enables farmers to raise their queries and get them resolved in their own language in real time.

Kisan-e Mitra is now available in 11 languages i.e. English, Hindi, Oriya, Tamil, Bengali, Malayalam, Gujarati, Punjabi, Kannada, Telugu and Marathi.

* Achievements and Honors

With the release of the 17th installment, the total amount released to farmers under PM-Kisan will exceed Rs 3.24 lakh crore.

Of this, Rs 1.75 lakh crore was transferred to eligible farmers during the Covid period, when they needed the direct cash benefits the most.

Over the past five years, the scheme has crossed several milestones and has received praise from various organizations including the World Bank for its comprehensive vision, scale and seamless transfer of funds directly into the accounts of eligible farmers.A study conducted by the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) on farmers in Uttar Pradesh shows that benefits under PM-Kisan reached most farmers, and they received the full amount without any leakage.
