A pilgrim from Meerut in Uttar Pradesh, who had visited Rudranath temple in Gopeshwar, Uttarakhand, died after falling down a steep slope into a gorge while returning.

District Disaster Management Center said that the incident happened on Wednesday evening.

Omendra Singh (48), resident of Kankar Kheda, Meerut, had come to visit Rudranath temple. It said that while returning from the temple, he fell into a ditch 200 meters below.

Relief and rescue teams were sent to the spot but Singh died on the spot.

The spot was far from the nearest road and it took hours for rescue workers to retrieve the bodies late on Wednesday night.

The trek to Rudranath Temple, which is part of the Panch Kedar chain, is considered one of the most difficult treks in Uttarakhand.

The temple can be visited only after covering a distance of about 20 km, more than half of which is a steep climb. The route to the temple passes through dangerous hills at many places.
