New Delhi, A PIL has been filed in the Supreme Court seeking direction to the Bihar government to conduct a structural audit and constitute an expert committee based on the findings to identify bridges that need to be either strengthened or Can be moved or demolished.

Ten incidents of bridge collapse have been reported in Bihar's Siwan, Saran, Madhubani, Araria, East Champaran and Kishanganj districts in more than a fortnight. Many people have claimed that heavy rains may have contributed to these incidents.

The PIL, filed by lawyer and petitioner Brajesh Singh, has raised concerns about the safety and longevity of bridges in the state, which witnesses floods and heavy rains during monsoon.

Apart from setting up a high-level expert panel, it also sought real-time monitoring of the bridges as per the parameters of the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.

In the PIL, the petitioner said that it is a matter of serious concern that Bihar is the most flood prone state in India. The PIL states that the total flood affected area in the state is 68,800 sq km which is 73.06 percent of its total geographical area.

"Therefore such regular occurrence of bridge collapse in Bihar is all the more devastating as the lives of people at large are in danger. Therefore, immediate intervention of this Court is required to save the lives of the people, as earlier the petitioner of the under construction bridges Said, "Its achievement fell regularly."

In view of the incidents of bridge collapse, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has directed the Road Construction and Rural Works Department to survey all the old bridges in the state and identify those that need immediate repair.
