Palghar (Maharashtra): An angry boyfriend attacked his girlfriend 18 times on the head on a street in Vasai on Friday, while many people watched the horrific scene, police said.

“The accused attacked the woman with an industrial spanner. There were 18 wounds on his body,” said Jayaraj Ranaware, senior inspector of Waliv police station.

Police said that Rohit Yadav (32) and the woman Aarti Yadav (22) were neighbors and were in a relationship for the last few years. Recently, he had stopped contacting her, leading her to suspect that he was having an affair with someone else.“Why did you do this to me,” the man kept saying and kept hitting him on the head with the spanner. A large number of spectators remained silent, except for one person who came out to intervene.

Video footage showed a large crowd watching the attack, but no one intervened to help the woman as the man attacked her with a spanner, police said.

Valiv police have registered a case of murder, arrested the accused and are currently investigating the incident further.

A video of the attack, which took place around 8.30 am in Chinchpada area of ​​Vasai, surfaced on social media.Police said the victim and the man lived in the same neighborhood in Nalla Sopara and worked in an industrial estate.

She was on her way to work with the attacker when they got into a fight on the way, an officer said.

The man continued to attack her even after she fell to the ground. He did not run away from the spot and remained sitting on the stairs near the body, the officer said.

A team of Valiv police reached the spot and sent the body for post-mortem.Police have detained a man and a woman who filmed the attack and uploaded them on social media.

CCTV footage of the incident went viral on social media, causing outrage among the public and public representatives.

Maharashtra Legislative Council Deputy Speaker Neelam Gore said there was a need to implement a "zero tolerance towards crimes against women" policy.
