Mumbai: Congress leader Nana Patole has filed nomination for the election for Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) president on July 23, sources close to him said.

However, his nomination was submitted after the deadline of 5 pm on Tuesday and it is not clear whether it will be accepted or not, he said.

Earlier, the city's Mazgaon Cricket Club had appointed state Congress chief Patole as its representative in the MCA, escalating speculation that he may contest the elections.

The post of MCA president had fallen vacant after the death of current chief Amol Kale last month.

Patole, in a tweet on Wednesday, thanked Mazgaon Cricket Club for giving him the opportunity to represent him at MCA.

"I assure that I will make genuine efforts to work for the welfare of young players coming from humble backgrounds," he said.

In the past, senior politicians from Maharashtra including Prithviraj Chavan and the late Vilasrao Deshmukh and Gopinath Munde have represented the club in the MCA.
