The shocking accident occurred when the deceased patient Sulochana (57) was shifted from the Medical College Hospital to a private hospital here for emergency surgery, he said.
Police said the speeding ambulance skidded after losing control and hit a roadside electric pole, causing it to catch fire.
Apart from the female patient and the driver, there were also two people, a doctor and a nurse in the vehicle. He escaped unharmed and suffered minor injuries, but his patient was trapped in the vehicle and burned to death.
Police said the rescued people were taken to a nearby hospital.
