Guwahati: Despite local hero Riyan Parag's brilliant innings of 48 runs, Rajasthan Royals struggled against several accurate bowlers on a slow pitch and ended up at 144 for nine in their IPL match against Punjab Kings here on Wednesday.

R Ashwin (28, 19b, 3x4, 1x6) and Parag (48, 34, 6x4) tried to accelerate during the 50-run partnership for the fourth wicket, but it could only bring temporary momentum for RR, who were batting first. Already qualified for this. Playoffs.

In fact, Rajasthan's innings had started to slow down after the early loss of Yashasvi Jaiswal, who returned the ball to his stumps off Sam Curran (2/24).

Sanju Samson (18), who crossed 500 runs in a season for the first time in his IPL career, and Tom-Kohler Cadmore (18, 23b) added 36 runs for the second wicket, but it took six overs. He also played some attractive shots in between, like Cadmore's superb C to deep midwicket off Curran and Samson's backfoot punch through cover off left-arm fast bowler Arshdeep Singh.

But with Curran and Arshdeep finding a hint of swing and maintaining the good line, scoring was not an easy proposition for the RR batsmen.

Eventually, Samson, who tried a hopping cut off fast bowler Nathan Ellis, gave a simple catch to Rahul Chahar at point in the seventh over.

Cadmore also returned to the dugout in the next over, as his almighty delivery of leg spinner Chahar (2/26) could not get past Jitesh Sharma.

Those twin dismissals actually paved the way for the best phase of the Royals innings as Ashwin and Parag kept their foot on the right pedal.Ashwin displayed his batting prowess, giving away 17 runs to Chahar in the 12th over, which included a sequence of 6, 4, 4 and the first four was a stunning reverse scoop over backward point.

But he could not take his innings forward and Arshdeep was bowled by Shashank Singh.

Parag, normally a free-flowing batsman, had to curb his temperament in front of the home crowd due to the regular fall of wickets at the other end.

But Curran's late cut that went all the way to third man is testament to his ability and timing as he also crossed the 500-run mark for the season, the first by any uncapped player in the IPL after teammate Yashasvi Jaiswa (625). Second time by an Indian player. ) became the first in the 2023 season. The first player to cross 500 runs as an uncapped player was Australian Shaun Marsh (616 runs), who was yet to earn a national cap, in the inaugural edition in 2008.

However, apart from conquering those short wickets the RR batsmen failed to consistently shift into top gear, and their hopes of making a late charge also ended when Harshal Patel trapped Parag LBW.
