Serhan Aktoprak, head of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) mission in the Pacific island nation, told Xinhua news agency that the UN migration agency received the statement on Monday.

The disaster also caused major destruction to buildings and food gardens as well as a major impact on PNG's economic lifeline, according to a statement issued by the centre's acting director Lucette Las Manas, Xinhua new agency reports.

"The main highway to the Porgera mine is completely blocked. The situation remains unstable as the landslide is slowly progressing, posing a threat to both rescue teams and survivors," Mana said.

The acting director also said a joint government team inspected the affected village on Sunday and presented a check of 500,000 kina (about $128,796) to the Enga provincial government to provide immediate relief assistance.
