New Delhi: Delhi University Vice-Chancellor Yogesh Singh on Friday said that paper leakage in various competitive examinations is a serious problem and there is an urgent need for structural reforms in the examination system to prevent such irregularities.

He said the Center must act against those involved in "rigging" of exams and expressed hope that the CBI probe into the alleged leak of NEET-UG and UGC-NET exam papers would yield a positive result.

In an interview with him, Singh expressed confidence that things will improve soon as the government addresses the issue seriously.

"There are criminal gangs in the country trying to leak exams. Firstly, action must be taken against such gangs. Secondly, structural reforms are required within the examination system which (should) evolve over time," he said.

The Center faces the challenge of eliminating such elements, the vice-chancellor said.

“The CBI investigation ordered into the paper leak incidents will yield a positive result and instil fear in the minds of criminals.

"This is a very serious matter. We need to look at it from a broader perspective... (instead of) just focusing on the irregularities in one or two exams. I think the situation will improve when the reforms are taken into consideration," Singh said.

Given the seriousness with which the government is addressing the issue, the situation will improve soon, he said.

While NEET-UG is under the scanner for several irregularities, including an alleged paper leak, UGC-NET was canceled after the Education Ministry received information that the integrity of the exam was compromised. Two other exams, CSIR-UGC NET and NEET PG, were canceled as a preventive measure.

The National Testing Agency (NTA), which conducts these exams, subsequently announced new dates for some of these exams.

The Center has set up a seven-member panel headed by former ISRO chief R Radhakrishnan to make recommendations on reforms in the examination process, improving data security protocols and reviewing the structure and operations of the NTA.

The NTA also conducts the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) for admission to central universities.

The NTA has not yet released the results of the CUET-UG exam. As a result, admissions in many central universities, including DU, have been delayed and their academic calendars will be tight.
