Jammu, The Jammu and Kashmir administration has formed a seven-member panel to identify foreigners who have been staying illegally in Jammu and Kashmir for the last 13 years, with a view to facilitating their deportation.

The panel has been tasked with collecting biographical and biometric details of illegal immigrants and maintaining a regularly updated digital record.

"Reconstitution of the committee to identify foreigners staying illegally in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir since 2011 is hereby sanctioned," Principal Secretary to Government, Home Department, Chandraker Bharti, said in an order.

The administrative secretary of the home department will chair the panel. Other members include the Foreigners Regional Registration Officer (FRRO) of Punjab, Criminal Investigation Department (Special Branch) of Jammu and Srinagar headquarters, and all district SSPs and SPs (Foreigners Registration), along with the state coordinator, NIC.

According to the order, the committee has to prepare a monthly report and submit it to the Union Home Ministry by the fifth day of every month.

The Home Department has also directed the panel to coordinate and monitor efforts related to tracing and deportation of foreign nationals residing illegally in the Union Territory.

Additionally, the panel will monitor progress made on these issues and report periodically to the Department of the Interior.

It is also responsible for disseminating information on ongoing cases in various courts, as well as monitoring and updating the status of these cases to relevant stakeholders.

The nodal officer will supervise the collection of biographical and biometric data of illegal immigrants, compile progress reports and maintain an updated digital record of those staying illegally in Jammu and Kashmir on a regular basis, the order said.

In 2021, the Jammu and Kashmir Police carried out an operation against illegal immigrants and detained over 270 Rohingyas from Myanmar, including 74 women and 70 children, in Hiranagar subjail in Kathua district. 05/25/2024 MNK
