The scene then shifts to Colombo, where R. Premadasa International Cricket Stadium will host three ODI matches on August 1, 4 and 7 respectively. India last toured Sri Lanka for a white-ball series in July 2021, where Rahul Dravid stepped in as the head coach, while Shikhar Dhawan was the captain.

Despite the absence of key players and support staff as they were busy preparing for the Test series in England, India won the ODI series 2–1, while Sri Lanka emerged victorious by the same margin in the T20I.

This will be the first series for both India and Sri Lanka with new head coaches. SLC had named Sanath Jayasuriya as the team's interim head coach following Chris Silverwood's exit from the 2024 Men's T20 World Cup following their group-stage exit.

On the other hand, India have appointed Gautam Gambhir as the new head coach after Dravid's tenure ended with the 2024 T20 World Cup win in the West Indies last month. While the Sri Lankan players are playing LPL 2024, the young Indian team is in Zimbabwe for a five-match T20 series ending on July 14.
