Nakba Remembrance Day is held every year on 15 May, with marches and demonstrations. The State of Israel was proclaimed on 14 May 1948.

This year, the central event is planned in Ramallah in the West Bank, where sirens are expected to sound for 76 seconds to commemorate 76 years of the Nakba.

Given the situation in the Gaza Strip, observers are predicting conflict with Israeli forces in the West Bank.

The United Nations estimates that Palestinian refugees and their descendants currently number around 6 million.

Establishing a permanent home for refugees, along with the status of Jerusalem, is considered one of the most complex problems in the Israeli–Palestinian conflict.

According to the Palestinian Statistics Office, there are approximately 14 million Palestinians worldwide, half of whom live in the West Bank, East Jerusalem, the Gaza Strip and Israel.

Of Israel's population of approximately 100 million, about 20 percent are Arabs.
