"The incident was immediately contained and the public evacuated as a safety measure. The palace and gardens are now open," the Palace of Versailles said Tuesday. But no further information was given about the incident.

A "very significant" firefighting operation had been underway at the site since the afternoon, French daily Le Figaro reported.

Multiple social media videos showed smoke billowing from the palace while visitors were being evacuated, Xinhua news agency reported.

One of France's national treasures, the former royal residence welcomes millions of visitors each year.

The Park of Versailles will be the host venue for the equestrian competitions and modern pentathlon at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games.
