Khyber Pakhtunkhwa [Pakistan] Unidentified gunmen killed Khalil Jibran, a senior journalist, near his residence in Landi Kotal town of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Geo News reported on Wednesday.

District Police Officer (DPO) Khyber Salim Abbas said Jibran, who worked in a private news channel, was targeted by unidentified miscreants on a motorcycle when he was going towards his residence with his friend Sajjad Advocate.

The journalist's car broke down near his house when gunmen surrounded him, pulled him out of his vehicle and opened fire on him, the DPO said, adding that the incident took place in Majrina area around Landi Kotal police station.

According to the police officer, Jibran, who was also the former president of Landi Kotal Press Club, died on the spot and Sajjad was injured while the criminals fled the scene.

The body was shifted to Landi Kotal Hospital for post-mortem.DPO Abbas claimed that Jibran had also received threats from terrorists.

KP Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur took note of the incident and ordered the concerned authorities to immediately arrest the culprits of the journalist's murder.

The Association of Electronic Media Editors and News Directors (AEMEND) in a statement criticized the failure of higher authorities to stop such incidents as journalists continue to face torture, kidnapping and threats across the country.

Last month, Nasrullah Gadani, another journalist of a Sindhi newspaper, was targeted by unidentified motorcycle-riding assailants near Korai Goth, 12 km from Mirpur Mathelo, leaving him seriously injured.

Gadani was riding his motorcycle at the time of the unfortunate incident. After the attack, police shifted him to Civil Hospital Mirpur Mathelo, where he received emergency medical aid and then was referred to Rahim Yar Khan for surgery.Later, he was shifted to Karachi via air ambulance for better treatment, with the Sindh government announcing to bear all his medical costs.

However, even shifting him to a better hospital was not successful as he died about three days later.
