Islamabad [Pakistan], In a major development, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (Pakistan) top leader Omar Ayub Khan has resigned as the party's general secretary, Geo News reported.

Ayub said he will step down from his position to focus on his role as leader of the opposition in Pakistan's national assembly.

"I am very grateful to [former] Prime Minister Imran Khan sahib for accepting my resignation as general secretary to focus on my role as leader of the opposition in the National Assembly of Pakistan," he posted under his official name X on Thursday.

Ayub said he had submitted his resignation on June 22, 2024 to founder and jailed former prime minister Imran Khan as well as party president lawyer Gohar Ali Khan.

"Leader of Opposition in Senate Senator Shibli Faraz sahib conveyed my message to [former] Prime Minister Imran Khan sahib today during his meeting at Adyala Jail," he added.

The NA opposition leader further said that further changes would be made to the party's organizational structure in the coming days following the instructions of the party founder.

"I want to thank all the family members, MPs and Tanzeem officials who have worked tirelessly and faced tremendous hardships for [former] Prime Minister Imran Khan sahib and."

The development came amid reports of divisions in the ranks of the .

Earlier, Geo News reported citing sources who supported 27 Sunni lawmakers from the Ittehad Council (SIC) who deliberated on the option of resigning from the National Assembly in protest against the party's top leadership.

Insiders said 21 of 27 legislators hinted at the formation of a forward bloc over the top leaders' inability to secure the release of party founder Imran Khan from jail.

They also "conveyed a message" to Chief Barrister Gohar and General Secretary Omar Ayub to make "serious efforts" for the release of the jailed leaders.

Disgruntled lawmakers complained that some leaders were considering higher positions instead of focusing on the release of the party's founder and leaders.

Ayub was appointed general secretary last year after his predecessor, Asad Umar, left the party and active politics, joining the ranks of dozens of party members who parted ways with former Prime Minister Khan following the violent protests on September 9.
