ISLAMABAD: Pakistan on Monday handed over to India a list of defense personnel missing from the 1965 and 1971 wars, while exchanging lists of civilian prisoners and fishermen in each other's custody, the Foreign Office said.

It said India and Pakistan exchanged lists of civilian prisoners and fishermen in each other's custody through diplomatic channels simultaneously in New Delhi and Islamabad.

"A list of 38 missing Pakistani defense personnel, who are believed to be in India's custody since the 1965 and 1971 wars, was also handed over by Pakistan," the Foreign Office said in a statement.

Pakistan has shared a list of 254 Indian or believed to be Pakistani civilian prisoners and fishermen lodged in Pakistani jails, while India has shared a list of 452 Pakistani or believed to be Pakistani civilian prisoners and fishermen lodged in Indian jails. Said.

Under the provisions of the Bilateral Agreement on Consular Access 2008, such lists are exchanged on 1 January and 1 July each year.

The Foreign Office said the government has called for the immediate release and repatriation of all Pakistani prisoners who have completed their sentences in India.

"Special consular access to various prisoners believed to be Pakistanis, including physically and mentally handicapped prisoners, and prompt confirmation of their national status have been requested," it said.

Pakistan also urged India to ensure the safety, security and welfare of all Pakistani or Pakistani-deemed prisoners awaiting their release and repatriation.

The Foreign Office said that as part of the government's efforts, the repatriation of 62 Pakistani prisoners has been ensured in 2023 and 4 in the current year.
