ISLAMABAD: A Pakistani court on Thursday said it will pronounce its verdict on May 29 on the appeal against the conviction of jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi in an illegal marriage case.

Khan (71) and Bibi (49) were sentenced to seven years in prison each by the trial court on February 3 for marrying during iddat, the mandatory period for a woman to wait before marrying again. Husband or divorce.

Bushra's ex-husband Khawar Maneka had filed a case against the couple in November 2023, alleging that they had married Bushra without following the mandatory waiting period of Iddat. He demanded the court to declare this marriage void.

The former first couple had challenged the verdict in the Islamabad District Sessions Court, where Judge Shahrukh Arjumand heard the appeal and reserved the verdict after hearing the lawyers' arguments.

The court said it would pronounce its verdict on May 29.

The couple married in 2018, the year Khan won the elections and became Prime Minister. Bushra was apparently his spiritual guide but during their meetings the two developed affection for each other. She divorced her husband of 28 years, with whom she had five children.

She is the third wife of former cricket hero Khan, who was known as a playboy during the heyday of his sporting career.
