He was convicted of visa violation in 2013 and is currently lodged in Gorakhpur jail.

According to Gorakhpur Jail Superintendent Dilip Pandey, Mohammad Masroor has obtained the No Objection Certificate from the Ministry of External Affairs.

Pandey noted that Masroor has served the maximum sentence of 15 years for visa violation, and the prison authorities have approached the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) to initiate necessary legal processes and take a final decision regarding his release.

Masroor was arrested by the Bahraich police in 2009 while attempting to enter India through the India-Nepal border in the district.

After questioning, police filed a charge sheet against Masroor on charges of espionage, violating passport and visa norms and planning attacks on India in 2010.
