New Delhi: According to Delhi Traffic Police, the number of drunk driving challans in the first three months of 2024 saw a staggering 1,550 percent increase compared to the same period in 2022.

During the year 2024, from January 1 to March 31, the Delhi Traffic Police launched a special drive against drunk driving and booked 6,591 violators compared to 399 in 2022, the traffic police said in a statement on Sunday.

He said that compared to the same period last year, 5,384 challans were issued for this offense in 2023, which saw an increase of 22 per cent.

Police said this worrying trend underlines the urgent need to raise awareness for strict enforcement of traffic rules to ensure public safety on Delhi roads.

"As per the data, there has been a significant increase in the number of cases related to drink driving during the period January to March 2020 as compared to the corresponding period of previous years. The increase in such incidents is worrying and demands immediate Delhi Traffic attention of both law enforcement agencies and the public, a senior police officer said.

The officer said that driving under the influence of alcohol not only puts the life of the driver at risk, but also the lives of pedestrians and other motorists on the roads.
