CHANDIGARH: An interstate organized crime syndicate was busted and its leader and four members arrested from a flat in Mohali's Kharar, a top Punjab Police official said on Monday.

Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav said the syndicate leader has been identified as Jai Sharma alias Sukha Pistol Ambarsariya of Prem Nagar, Amritsar.

The four members are Nikhil Sharma alias Lala of Sandhu Colony, Amritsar, Moni of Kot Khalsa, Amritsar, and Arpit Thakur and Karan Sharma of Bilaspur district of Himachal Pradesh.

Yadav said that seven cases related to Arms Act, snatching and theft are registered against Sukha pistol.

Police also seized two .32 bore pistols, three magazines and eight live cartridges from them.

DGP Yadav said police teams from Amritsar had kept an eye on the activities of the syndicate after credible input that Sukha Pistol and his associates had gone to Khandwa in Madhya Pradesh to buy weapons illegally.

Yadav said, after their return to Punjab, police traced their location in Kharar and raided a flat, arrested the accused and seized arms and ammunition.

The police chief said preliminary investigation revealed that the accused were planning to attack rival gang members.

He said, a case has been registered against him under section 111 (organized crime) of the Indian Justice Code.

Police Commissioner (Amritsar) Ranjit Singh Dhillon said the syndicate was involved in theft, snatching and arms smuggling.

Further investigation is underway to trace the forward and backward linkages of the module and identify the Madhya Pradesh based arms smugglers.

More arrests and seizures are expected, Dhillon said.
