Mumbai: Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Tuesday claimed that the opposition's propaganda that the NDA will change the Constitution and the delay in announcing candidates led to the Shiv Sena and its allies losing some seats.

Speaking to reporters, Shinde said the opposition's vote bank politics has affected the NDA's performance.

"The opposition parties continuously campaigned that we will change the Constitution. We failed to remove doubts among the voters. Our loss is also due to vote bank politics," he said.

The chief ministers also blamed the delay in announcing candidates on some seats for the failures in some constituencies.

Shinde was apparently referring to the Nashik Lok Sabha seat, where Shiv Sena had fielded Hemant Godse despite opposition from the BJP and NCP. Godse is trailing the Shiv Sena (UBT) candidate.

Shinde also replaced his sitting MPs from Hingoli and Yavatmal-Washim constituencies and the party's candidates are trailing on both the seats.

He said, "Vote bank politics also affected us. I want to tell them (the opposition) that people never liked vote bank politics. Late Shiv Sena founder Balasaheb Thackeray never liked it."

Shinde has managed to capture his stronghold Thane, where he has fielded his close aide Naresh Mhaske.

"People voted for the work done by my government in the last two years and the work done by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the last 10 years. The people of Thane are standing with us for our work," he said.
