New Delhi [India], For the first time since independence, the Lok Sabha will hold elections for the post of speaker of the house. The election was forced after consensus was circumvented by the government, which refused to back down on awarding the vice-presidential post to the opposition.

Following a breakdown in negotiations, the INDIA bloc has fielded eight-term MP K Suresh as its candidate for the post of president. Suresh will take on Om Birla, the BJP MP from Kota and speaker of the 17th Lok Sabha. Elections for the position will be held on June 26.

Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav blamed the BJP for forcing the contest by not giving in to the opposition's demand for a vice president.

"Soon we will have everything in front of us. The only demand of the opposition was that the vice president be from the opposition," he said.

The government, in turn, has accused the opposition of indulging in conditional politics and failing to maintain the dignity of the chamber by forcing an election for the speaker's post.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said: "We had a conversation with all opposition leaders about the post of Speaker. The Speaker is not for a party, it is for the functioning of the House. The Speaker is elected unanimously. .It is discouraging that the Congress has nominated its candidate for Speaker. There has never been an election for the Speaker's post. The Congress has put this condition: if they get the post of Vice President, they will support our candidate for the post of Speaker. and because of the positions of president and vice president is not right.

Union Civil Aviation Minister and TDP leader Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu said, "It is not good to maintain conditions. Democracy does not work according to conditions. And as far as the election of the president is concerned, irrespective of what which NDA should have done, Everyone did it. Especially Rajnath Singh ji who is a senior leader, he approached everyone He also approached the opposition and told them that we are proposing Om Birla ji's name, so. that their help is needed in this. When it was their turn to help, they made the condition that we would do it only if they gave us this (the position of vice president. There was never a convention to support the president conditionally... They want to play politics). in this too."

The opposition says it is still willing to have the president's election unanimous if the government gives in to its demand. Since the government shows no intention to do so, the election for the position will take place on June 26. On June 27, the president will address both houses of Parliament. With 290 MPs, the NDA has the numbers to ensure the election of OM Birla as president.
