KARACHI: At least one person was killed and 17 others injured in twin landmine blasts in Pakistan's restive Balochistan province, police said Thursday.

The blasts occurred in the province's Dukki district and echoed throughout the city, causing panic among residents.

Police said the first blast occurred when an explosive device buried in a truck carrying COA detonated.

"The powerful blast caused injuries and one person died and it also attracted other people to the blast site," a senior police officer said.

A short time later, a second explosion occurred around the crash site when another landmine detonated.

Police officer said that one person died and around 17 others were injured in both the incidents.

Balochistan's Home Minister, Mir Ziaullah Langove, condemned the blasts and described them as an attempt by terrorists to create chaos and fear in the province and block progress.

While Dukki, known for its abundant coal reserves, has long been a hub of economic activity, thousands of coal miners toiling in its mines have in recent times been attacked by outlawed separatist and extremist organizations.

Earlier this week, five coal miners from other provinces were abducted by armed men in Dukki. However, they returned to their homes after their families apparently paid some ransom.
