Thane, A 47-year-old man died in a fire that broke out in an apartment in a 27-storey residential building in Maharashtra's Thane city early Wednesday.

Thane Municipal Corporation disaster management cell chief Yasin Tadvi said the fire broke out at 3.11 am in the apartment located on the fourth floor of the building in Tulsidham Society.

He said that after receiving the alert, fire brigade personnel of Balkum and the team of Regional Disaster Management Cell reached the spot.

Rescue workers found a man named Arun Kedia lying unconscious in a room of the flat. He was taken to a nearby hospital where doctors declared him brought dead, the official said.

He said four other people living in the house, including two minors, got out safely.

Many household items including rooms and furniture were destroyed in the fire. The official said that the fire was brought under control by 4.22 am.

He said other people living in the building came out of their apartments immediately after the fire.

The official said the cause of the fire is being investigated.
