This year's theme 'My Health, My Right' focuses on equal access to quality health care.

Dr. Rohit Garg Consultant, Infectious Diseases, Amrita Hospital Faridabad said, “The government's focus on 'One Health' approach, recognizing the interconnectedness between human, animal and environmental health, will help in predicting and preventing future zoonotic disease outbreaks. is important." Experts said the country's response to the recent COVID-19 pandemic and Nipah virus outbreak reflects its evolving capacity to manage infectious diseases.

He said lessons learned from each incident have helped the country improve preparedness for future pandemics, including by expanding surveillance for hypothetical respiratory viruses, investing in diagnostic infrastructure, and responding to emerging diseases. The biosafety level and 4 laboratories to formulate the One Health approach are welcome and important steps towards tackling such challenges, Gautam Menon, Dean, Research and Professor of Physics and Biology, Ashoka University, told IANS.

India's important measures during the Covid pandemic include increasing testing facilities, expanding health care infrastructure, contact tracing and vaccination drive.

It was one of the largest globally, and was significant, with India developing an indigenous vaccine, Covaxin, along with deploying other vaccines."These actions highlighted the country's ability to mobilize vast resources and innovate under pressure," Dr Rohit said.

Similarly, during the Nipah virus outbreak, although more localised, India employed rapid response teams, increased surveillance and implemented containment measures.

"Post-pandemic India is very different in terms of capacity for pathogen surveillance and pandemic prevention or control compared to pre-pandemic times. This is partly structural, but mostly structural, in terms of greater scientific and health capacity Better defined roles for existing organizations, and creation of new multi-stakeholder institutions like On Health,” Anurag Aggarwal, dean of biosciences and health research at the Triveda School of Biosciences at Ashoka University, told IANS.-- RVT/PGH
