The BBC said the shootings occurred in the city of Akron just after midnight local time (5 a.m. BST), with police in the city reporting that at least 25 people were shot, one of whom died. Although many of the injuries were not life-threatening, some victims were in "more serious condition", it was acknowledged.

Police at the crime scene near Kelly Street and 8th Avenue found dozens of bullet casings and a gun in the area.

The Akron Police Department said no one has been arrested or identified as a suspect and the investigation is ongoing.

Akron Mayor Shammas Malik and Police Chief Brian Harding later issued a joint statement on social media, assuring that they would "bring those responsible to justice".

"Our city is reeling from the devastation of senseless violence. With more than two dozen victims, the pain and trauma are echoing throughout Akron today as we search for answers," he said in the statement.

Assuring anonymity, the officials asked anyone with information about the shooting to come forward. “We need you to speak out to prevent further violence and retaliation,” he said.
