New Delhi, Returning to the Telecom Ministry after almost a decade and a half, Jyotiraditya Scindia as the new Telecom Minister has set himself the task of completing the 5G spectrum auction to be held later this month.

Apart from the spectrum auction, where airwaves worth over Rs 96,000 crore will be on the block, Scindia will also have to prioritize issues like satellite broadband services, security clearance for Elon Musk-led Startlink and rule making for the new Telecom Act.

CINIDA will undertake work on a 100-day agenda that will outline clear priority areas, key deliverables, roadmap and targets for the telecom sector.

The big mega event happening later this month – as early as June 25 – is the spectrum auction, where spectrum is available in 800 MHz, 900 MHz, 1,800 MHz, 2,100 MHz, 2,300 MHz, 2,500 MHz, 3,300 MHz and 26 MHz. The GHz band will see the participation of telecom giants Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel.

Scindia, who took over the reins from Union minister Ashwini Vaishnav, inherits a sector with better financial metrics, less litigation and less uncertainty following the disposal of several cases in courts.

Sinidha's ministerial journey began in 2008 as Minister of State for Telecommunications, Posts and IT and she had DMK's A Raja as her senior minister. He played an important role in pursuing post office modernization with the Project Arrow scheme.

As a minister in the Modi 3.0 government, Scindia will be faced with the challenge of reviving state-run telecom company BSNL and settling MTNL's debt issues.

Scindia, who was the aviation minister in the previous Modi government, won from Guna in Madhya Pradesh by more than 5.40 lakh votes.
