Kolkata, After an old video clip of a girl being assaulted by a group of people inside a club in North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal came into circulation, the police launched a suo motu case and arrested two people.

Barrackpore police said that after identifying the accused shown in the approximately two-year-old video, the force arrested them.

While the BJP alleged that a person close to the local TMC MLA was behind the torture of the girl, the state's ruling party demanded that the video be examined for authenticity.

The reason for the girl's torture is still unknown.

"The police have taken note of an old video now circulating on social media regarding the assault of a girl. A suo motu criminal case has been initiated. All legal action is being taken against the persons seen in (the) video. 2 of them are already in custody," Barrackpore police said in a post on X.

Police sources said the video, whose authenticity was not verified by him, was at least a couple of years old.

The video clip showed some people holding one person's legs and hands while suspending them in the air, while two others hit them with sticks.

The incident allegedly occurred at a club in Ariadaha in North 24 Parganas district.

The clip was released by West Bengal BJP president Sukanta Majumdar, who blamed the arrested Jayant Singh for the incident.

"Absolutely shocked by the video emerging from Taltala Club, Kamarhati, showing Jayant Singh, a close aide of TMC MLA Madan Mitra, brutally attacking a girl. This heinous act under a government that claims to uphold women's rights is a shame for humanity," Majumdar posted on X.

Senior TMC leader Santanu Sen demanded forensic proof of the video and said it was a ploy by the BJP to tarnish the image of West Bengal.

Incidentally, a teenager and his mother were attacked in Ariadaha by a group of men allegedly led by Singh.
